What is the Difference Between an ISX15 and X15?
Both the ISX15 and X15 are Cummins X-series engines. Cummins introduced the ISX15 model in 1999, the X15 was launched in 2016, it is an updated model of the X15 engine. Although both the X15 and ISX15 are 14.9 liters engines, the same bore and stroke, same cylinder block, crankshaft, and connecting rod, but there are still many differences between these two model engines.
1. Different emission systems
The ISX15 has been subject to increasingly strict federal emission regulations since is launched, so the engine has also gone from almost no emission control devices to the introduction of exhaust gas recirculation devices, then to the addition of diesel particulate filters and their regeneration cycles. Later, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and the use of high-pressure common rail injection systems were added to reduce diesel engine emissions.
The X15 engine has adopted a dual SGR system since its release, meeting the latest greenhouse gas and fuel efficiency standards.

2. The X15 has better fuel economy and lower maintenance costs
The X15 engine uses components with less friction than the ISX15 engine. For example, the new piston design, shorter piston skirt, shorter piston height, closer to the combustion platform, all these can help better reduce friction resistance.
The technology upgraded fuel pump and water pump also improve the efficiency of fuel use.
3. X15 engine have more versions
X15 has three different types of engines to choose from: Efficiency Series, Productivity Series and Performance Series. The Efficiency Series X15 is oriented towards fuel economy, and its fuel economy is 3% higher than the 2016 ISX15 and 10% higher than the 2012 engine. The Performance Series X15 has improved piston design, higher compression ratio, different injection pump, different turbocharger, and higher flow EGR system. The above improvements make the X15 engine have better performance.

4. Different injection pumps
The ISX15 engine high-pressure fuel pumps has a ceramic fuel plunger, and the fuel plungers in the X15 engine high-pressure fuel pumps have all been upgraded to steel material, thereby reducing engine failures logging. The X15 engine high-pressure fuel pumps has better performance.
